The first Catholic Scrutiny is a Lenten ritual for those preparing for Baptism (the Elect), focusing on the Woman at the Well (John 4) to highlight thirst, sin, and Jesus as the "living water" for new life, involving prayers, self-examination, and exorcism to cleanse the Elect of sin and worldly attachments before Easter. It's part of the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) process, teaching about sin and filling hearts with Christ's redeeming Spirit.

The Second Scrutiny is a Lenten rite within the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) for catechumens (those preparing for baptism), usually held on the Fourth Sunday of Lent, focusing on spiritual healing, moving from darkness to light, and uncovering sin through the Gospel story of the man born blind, prompting deeper self-examination and reliance on Christ as Healer and Redeemer for the whole community, not just the elect.

The Third Scrutiny is the final of three special rites during Lent for adults (the Elect) preparing for Baptism at the Easter Vigil, usually held on the Fifth Sunday of Lent; it focuses on Jesus as the "Resurrection and the Life," highlighting themes of spiritual rebirth and overcoming sin, using the Gospel of Lazarus's raising from the dead (John 11) to call candidates from spiritual death to new life in Christ.
